Essential by Soulwax

Soulwax, 2 many DJ’s or the Dewaele brothers… as Soulwax they are probably best known by now, even if the actual band concept behind this name is very much mixed up with the 2 many DJ’s concept. Not only have they DJ’d as Soulwax with mix series or radio shows like Hang All DJ’s, but last year they recorded an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1.

The first hour consists of 14 tracks specially produced for this mix and the second hour continues with an incredibly well chosen and quickly mixed variety of classics and edits. Both hours are great!

In June, 12 of the 14 tracks were released with the album Essential and landed high on the list of the best albums of the year so far, not only for the Mixmag editorial team. Surprisingly, the album is being talked about more than From Dewee or the Cafè Belgica soundtrack. Although the latter is just as ingenious, as the two brothers specially designed the bands that appear on it.

The Essential album is available from your favourite streaming service and, with download codes, on vinyl. In addition to the albums just mentioned, As Heard On Radio Soulwax Part 9 and the first edition of Get yer yo yo’s out are also recommended. And when the two Dewaeles are around, whether as Soulwax or 2 many DJ’s, don’t hesitate!

Hi, I'm Olli, I moved to Hamburg in 2008 and have been working in the media industry there ever since. Before that, I spent many years spinning records in the Northern German club scene and writing for a few, often music-related, magazines. Now, after a break of several years, I'm blogging again and writing from the heart, which I think is a bit awesome.
